Airline search engines have made it really easy to search the entire world to find the cheapest ticket — you no longer have to search manually. While Kayak offers the “Explore” tool that allows you to put in your home airport and see a map of the world with all the flights on it, Google Flights also has a similar – and better – tool to use. If you are flexible with where you want to go (i.e., anywhere but home), use this tool to figure out where to go:

Sure, leaving on a Friday promptly after work or heading on vacation on a Sunday after a relaxing weekend might be ideal, but it turns out these are the absolute worst times to fly. High air traffic on these days means that airlines jack up the prices. Plan your flights so that you depart on a Wednesday if possible, followed by a Tuesday or a Saturday. Mid week departures are the slowest, so carriers know they will have to accept lower costs in order to fill their seats.
Typically, booking a whole trip with different airlines would be risky. For example, let's say your first flight with JetBlue was delayed, and you missed your connecting flight with Norwegian Air. Because the airlines have no association with each other, Norwegian Air has no obligation to reschedule your flight for free, so you would just lose your money. We haven't used this guarantee ourselves, but it certainly sounds like an appealing way to take the risk out of a thrifty flight hack!
The United States of America, USA for short, sprawls across the middle of North America, and is composed of 50 states. First time travellers arriving on flights to the USA have a huge choice of fascinating destinations to choose from in this vast nation. From breathtaking natural wonders, to mammoth and fascinating man made cities of towering steel and glass. Generally the peak tourist season runs from May to September, and the shoulder seasons of spring and autumn are the most picturesque months to visit the east and west coasts. The best time to visit really depends on where in the USA you are going and what you want to see. For travel during the shoulder seasons book at least a month in advance and for the high season book at least six months in advance. Holidays and annual events are major reasons for many visitors to arrive on flights to the USA, so check city events calendars before booking flight tickets.
The US is a large country and the climate varies by region and time of year. It experiences four seasons, but some areas of the country see a more drastic change between seasons than others. The Pacific Northwest has cool summers and mild winters, while just to the south, the West Coast is sunny and pleasant all year long. The Midwest sees a bigger change between seasons, with strong summers and winters and frequent tornadoes and thunderstorms. The East Coast fluctuates and many people head down to Florida to get the warmest winters on that side of the country. Traveling in the off-season can save you a lot of money.

You may feel silly adding an airline to your “liked” pages on Facebook or following them on Twitter, but the benefit of doing so is the special offers you’ll receive. Airlines want to reward regular customers and encourage them to continue flying with them, so they will often advertise special low rates and discounts via social media sites only. Follow as many airlines as you can for the best chances of getting a sweet deal.
Airline rewards programs are a great way to get free flights, free upgrades, and free companion tickets. No matter how often you fly, you should be signed up for the airline’s reward program. I stick to US-based airlines since they are involved in all the major alliances and you can earn miles on their partner flights. For example, if I fly Singapore Airlines, I can earn United Airlines miles because they are partners. Likewise, if I fly Air France, it’s credited to my Delta rewards account.
EasyJet allows to bring only one cabin bag on board, but it is bigger in size than most other low-cost airlines allow (56x45x25cm including handles and wheels). Easyjet warns that only 70 cabin bags can be taken on board, the rest will be put on hold free of charge. So if you want to carry your bag on board, you have to be in front line waiting for boarding.
The sheer size of the United States means that temperatures are going to vary widely throughout the four seasons, and you’ll want to keep your destination and the time of year in mind as you pack for your trip. If you’re visiting the Midwest or Northeast during the winter, make sure you bring along warm outwear, including gloves, scarves and hats, because temperatures can easily drop below zero. Temperatures in the south are more moderate at this time of year, and you should be able to get away with packing a lighter jacket to layer with a sweater. Those traveling to Denver or other Rocky Mountain states should consider a mix of clothing as 70 degree temperatures on one day can easily turn into a blizzard overnight.
While the above search engines are great, they do not always include small airlines, especially in less popularly booked routes and/or in remote regions. If you're flying somewhere obscure, Google search and ask around if there exists a local airline. While in South America we learnt that the LADE Air in Argentina (run by the military) has cheap flights to Patagonia, which is of course not listed in mass search engines online.
